Indoor Track Update - Distance Challenge & Weber State Invite

Darts -
It was a busy weekend with two indoor track meets in two days. It has been a great indoor season so far, and I am very pleased with the progress and the hard work that is getting us ready for the outdoor season to begin. It is hard to believe that we will officially start our outdoor practices only 4 weeks from today. The time will go by very quickly.

Utah Distance Challenge - We had some very strong performances on Friday night at the Olympic Oval. I really appreciate all of the help from parents, current athletes, and former athletes (Caleb, Spencer, and Abby) - we could not have put on such a successful meet without the help we received. One of the things I was most impressed with from the meet was the improvements we are seeing. Amber Berry improved her 1600m time by :17, Jessica Swim ran a season best in the 400m by :24, Josh Robinson improved his 800m by :08, and in the boys mile Dallin Larsen improved by :22, Branson Petty improved by :21, and Mitch Perry improved by :20. We now have 20 boys who have run under 5:00 for the indoor season - our record is 22 (I would love to see that go down). We also have 11 boys under 11:00 for the 3200 - the record is 13. We now have 7 girls under 12:00 in the 3200 which is a new record. Some of the top Davis performances included Taylor Cox - 5:03 in the 1600 (3rd) and 2:19 in the 800m (2nd), Hannah Albrechtsen 5:13 in the 1600 (8th), Aubrey Argyle 5:15 in the 1600 (9th) and 2:27 in the 800 (7th), Josey Hedquist :62 in the 400m (4th), Kenzie Weir 11:31 in the 3200 (6th), Logan MacKay 4:26 in the 1600 (3rd), Trevor Leavitt with another SCHOOL RECORD of 49.53 in the 400m (2nd), Gabe Alfaro also ran a very strong :53 in the 400m dash, Skylar Williams with a PR of 9:39 in the 3200 barely missing the win, and 3 other boys dipping under 10:00 for the 3200 - Josh Ward, Kimball Potter, and Colton Rimann.
You can see the full results at www.utahdistancechallenge.blogspot.com

Weber State Invitational - The Weber State results have not yet been published - but here is what I can recall. The field events were on Friday night, and we had 2 Davis athletes come away with 1st place finishes. Sophomore Jaron Erickson was the high jump champion with 5'10, and Andrew Tyndall was the pole vault champ with his indoor PR of 13'09. We also had strong performances from Kylee Edwards and Dallin Baires in the shot put. On the track on Saturday, Logan MacKay started the day off with a very impressive 9:55 in the first 3200m of his career - good enough for 3rd place (also #2 all-time for a Davis sophomore). Olivia Richards finished in the top 6 in the 55m hurdles. Carson Hunt made our all-time list in the 55m dash with 6.77. Skylar Williams was top 6 in the 400m. BriAnna Gipson finished well in the girls 400m. Logan MacKay finished a stellar triple with a 1st place finish in the 800m, and was followed closely by teammates Josh Ward and Colter Blanchard. Taylor Cox and Tatum Beard both finished in the top 5 in the girls 800m. Chelsey Johnson and Ashley Tyndall finished 2nd and 3rd in the 1600m.
You can eventually see the full results on the Weber State Athletic Site.

Simplot Games - I previously sent out an email with the Simplot Games information. Please let me know if you have any questions. If you are on the invite list, please let me know if you can or cannot attend by tomorrow (Tuesday). It is shaping up to be a very good group going up to Pocatello.

UHSTCA Meet - Will be on February 7-8 at the Olympic Oval in Kearns. I will hand out (and email out) the information early next week. We will need to pre-register all the athletes by Thursday (February 6). More information to come.

Track Class - Just a reminder that we will be dressing in workout clothes every day for track class. If you are not planning on being on the track TEAM, please make sure to get your schedule changed. Please talk to me or email me if you have any questions.

I just want to encourage all of you (whether you have been competing in indoor or are just beginning to work out with the track class) to work hard, to commit to giving your best, and to take care of your bodies. You should all be trying to get 8 hours of sleep per night. You should all be trying to drink more water (shoot for 80 ounces per day). You should all be eating healthy and eating enough calories to keep you fueled. You should all be making sure you are properly warmed up for workouts and races, and you should all be stretching after workouts and races. You should all be working to strengthen your core. One of our TEAM challenges is to see if we can get all of you strong enough to hole a plank for 3:00 (I know a few of you are already capable of this). If we are going to have a strong track season, we still have some serious work in front of us.

Indoor Track Update - BYU Invite

Darts -

I think the only track meet longer than the BYU Indoor Invitational is the BYU Outdoor Invitational in May. Although it was a very long 2 days, we had some outstanding performances - and I hope that most of you feel it was worth the time. I was very impressed with the patience of both our athletes and especially your parents. I felt bad that it took the entire Saturday for many of you, but I was really proud of your ability to compete after waiting a really long time. Overall we saw a lot of improvement and PRs for the indoor season. I know that many of you are still not satisfied with where you are, and I hope you are determined to keep working hard to getting to where you would like to be.

BYU Invite - We started Friday night with some solid field performances - Davis Owen finished 2nd in the long jump for the second week in a row, Sydney Larsen made the finals in the girls long jump, Dallin Baires missed finals by one place in the shot put with his 43' throw, and Jacob Moffett set a personal best in the high jump with 5'08. On Saturday, we started strong with the girls mile. 18 out of 18 girls who ran both at USU and at BYU had improvements in their times. We also set a team record with 11 girls under 5:40 (for the 1600m). Hannah Albrechtsen led the way with a 5:22 and a 3rd place finish, and Kenzie Weir, Chelsey Johnson, and Aubrey Argyle also finished in the top 10. The boys were nearly as impressive with 19 out of 23 running faster than they did at Utah State. Skylar Williams led the way with a 3rd place finish (the top runner from Utah) in a time of 4:28.70. Josh Ward also made the podium with a 4:34. We continued to show strength in the hurdles with 3 girls making the finals (Hailee Carattini, Olivia Richards, and Phebe Krutsch). Todd Froisland made the finals in the hurdles for the boys with 4 other boys just missing the finals. Carson Hunt improved his mark in the 60m Dash from last week with a 7.22 - putting him #6 on the Davis All-Time list. One of our top performances of the day was from Trevor Leavitt in the boys 400m Dash. Trevor ran 49.92 to place 2nd and break his own school record from last year. Trevor also came back strong in the 200m Dash to finish 2nd with 23.11 - a very fast time for the BYU track. Our sprinters finished the meet strong with the 4 x 1 lap relay - the girls were 3rd and the boys were 2nd - both teams running fast enough to make our all-time list. We are seeing some good things from our young (sophomore) sprinters and hurdlers as well - Emma Thatcher, Erika Stephenson, Elly Ferguson, Sydney Larsen, Griffin Hill, Jaron Erickson, Spencer Wright, Jacob Moffett, Kallin Fisher, Jason Barker, Taylor Southwick, McGyver Clark, and others are really working hard and showing some future potential to carry on our tradition. We had quite a few podium finishes from the remaining distance races. Josey Hedquist ran an indoor PR of 2:26 to place 2nd in the girls 800, and Hannah Albrechtsen earned her 2nd t-shirt of the day with 6th place finish. Logan MacKay and Colter Blanchard finished 2nd and 4th in the boys 800m - both are only sophomores - and Logan set the Davis all-time sophomore record for the indoor 800m. Our most dominant event of the day was the girls 2 mile. We had 5 girls in the race and all five girls finished in the top 7. Aubrey Argyle led the way with 2nd place in a Davis freshman record of 11:34, Kenzie Weir was 3rd, Chelsey Johnson was 5th, Ashley Tyndall was 6th, and Miah Weaver (also a freshman) finished 7th. Our freshman girls are tearing up the Davis freshman record book - Aubrey and Miah are now in our freshman top 6 for the 800, 1600, and 3200; and Ally Geisler is in the top 6 in both the 800 and 1600. The boys 2 mile was another strong event for us with 8 boys running under 11:00. Josh Ward finished 2nd in 10:08, Colton Rimann was 6th in 10:17, Kimball Potter was 7th in 10:18, and then 3 freshman (Frasier Williamson, Camren Todd, and Matt Ward) all made our freshman all-time list and all 3 ran under 10:50 in their first 2 miles. If we can continue to work for it, the future is looking good. And finally, Coach T, Caleb Ward, and I competed in the coaches mile - I just wanted to thank all of you for taking the opportunity to yell things to me that I usually enjoy yelling to you during races. It was fun to put the spikes on and get competitive.
You can find the Davis athlete's results at the bottom of the email, and the full results are on www.runnercard.com

Monday and Tuesday - We will not have practice on Monday or Tuesday. Distance Runners should go out for a 60 minute run on Monday, and the distance runners who are able to will be meeting at the school at 1:00pm on Tuesday to go down and workout at the Olympic Oval (we will need drivers). All Sprinters, Jumpers, and Hurdlers should go out for a 2-3 mile run each day. You should also be stretching and doing core work. If our sprinters and hurdlers are serious about getting faster, you are going to need to put in a little more work to improve your fitness. Throwers should try to get to a weight room and really work arms, legs, and core. Enjoy the break from school, but use it as an opportunity to get stronger and faster. We WILL workout on Wednesday after school (not during the track class).

Utah Distance Challenge - Friday (24th) at 5:00pm at the Olympic Oval. The events will start at 5:00 - and go in this order: 1600, 400, 800, 3200. The cost is $5.00. You are responsible for your own transportation down to the meet. I am in charge - so I will be heading down early. We would like most of our sprinters and hurdlers to come and race the 400m. You can find more information at www.utahdistancechallenge.blogspot.com

Weber State Invitational - The Weber State Invite is on Friday and Saturday (24th and 25th). The field events are on Friday night. Coach Agnello, Coach Tony, and Coach Clayton will be at Weber State Friday night with the jumpers and throwers. We do not need to pre-register. Sprinters and hurdlers (and some distance runners) will be competing in the track events on Saturday. I will hand out more information at practice on Wednesday.

Simplot (February 13-15) - I will be sending out a separate email about the Simplot Games in the next few days. I am finalizing the invite list. For those parents who would like to go to Simplot, we do not cover hotel rooms for parents. It is very difficult to find any hotel rooms in Pocatello, but if you want to make some phone calls, you can get on waiting lists, and there are often things that open up in the few weeks before the meet - you just have to keep calling and asking. The team will be staying at the Ameritel Inn. Once again, we will be able to take about 80 athletes and the cost will be $130.

Alumni Update - Our graduates continue to make us proud. Many of them competed in the Snake River Open this weekend in Pocatello - Seth Fortin finished 3rd in the 60m Dash with 6.93 and 5th in the 200m, Kyler Sprague was 6th in the 60m Hurdles, Christine Van Brocklin was 3rd in the 60 Hurdles and 8th in the 400m, Ellie Child was 5th in mile, Shaelee Sweatfield was 8th in the 800m, and Seth Gutzwiller and Tessa Brown also competed in the open mile. A few others were in New Mexico for their season opener - Shea Martinez finished 1st in the 800m with 2:09 and Bryce Hall finished 2nd in the Weight Throw.

Indoor Track Update - USU Invite

Darts -
USU Invitational: It is always nice to get the first indoor track meet in the books. I was very pleased with the TEAM effort in Logan last Saturday. We had nearly 100 athletes competing at the meet (1/4 of the overall entries), and we saw some outstanding performances. I think we have a lot of potential this indoor and outdoor season - but it is going to take a lot of hard work and a ton of TEAM work. We had some very strong season opening performances - Andrew Tyndall won the pole vault with a 13'06 jump (the best Davis indoor vault since 2003 and Davis #10 All Time), Hannah Albrechtsen won the 800m in 2:25.00 (Davis #10 All-Time), Logan MacKay won the boys 800m in 2:00.00 (a very fast time for the USU track and Davis #11 All-Time), Skylar Williams was 2nd place in the 1600m with 4:31, Davis Owen was 2nd in the long jump with 20'04.50 (Davis #9 All-Time), Kylee Edwards was 3rd in the shot put with 34'03 (Davis #11 All Time), and our boy and girl hurdlers ran some very fast opening times - led by Palmer Flood (8.92 - Davis #7 All-Time) and Hailee Carrattini (9.78). Not only did we set some of the top opening marks in the state, we also saw some gutsy performances - I was impressed with the girls 4 x 200 - who ran very strong and nearly came back to win after the baton was knocked out of Hailee's hand in the opening leg. I loved Jessie Swim's effort in the 400m - to get up and run as hard as she could after falling. And I thought some of our new athletes showed a lot of fearlessness in trying some new events and doing their best. Overall, it was a very good start for us. I like the energy and excitement I saw from the TEAM on Saturday - I think we can bring even more of that in the next few meets. I also want to see some more TEAM enthusiasm and cheering over the next few meets.

Going forward, I hope that you are excited to set some major PRs over the next few weeks. I want to see a lot of competitiveness, excitement, and passion as you compete at BYU this weekend. It is also important to have fun, make memories, and gain some close friends. Don't be afraid to be meet new people. I hope to see you posting pictures on Facebook and Instagram and also commenting about the awesome times at track meets on your Twitter accounts (follow us @davistrackandxc). Take full advantage of the opportunities you are given to compete and to have a fun experience with your TEAM.
Keep in mind that if you didn't have the best meet, that it is very early. Stay patient with yourselves, put some heart and work into what you are doing, and you will definitely start to see progress.
I have attached the USU results to this email. They are kind of hard to read. If you would like to see just the Davis performances, here are the links:

BYU Invite Information - I have attached the BYU Invite information to this email as well. The field events are this Friday (17th) and the track events are on Saturday (18th). I have to register everyone online by Thursday night - so I need the attached paper filled out and turned in by Thursday if you are planning on competing. I will also have copies of the paper at practice on Monday-Thursday. You will need to pay at the BYU meet when we arrive on Friday or Saturday - it is $4 per event. The other information is listed on the attached paper. Let me know if you have any questions. We will be taking a bus on Saturday (6:am again - woohoo!). You are also welcome to come down just for your events with your own transportation.

Team Pictures - We will have the indoor TEAM Pictures on Tuesday (tomorrow) after the meeting in the cafeteria.

Alumni Update - Our Davis Alumni made us proud at the opening college track meet at BYU this past weekend. In the mile, Joe White was 6th (4:29) and Logan Petty was 9th (4:34). Christine Van Brocklin finished 4th in the 60m hurdles and ran a lifetime best of 8.99. Kyler Sprague was 5th in the 60 hurdles and also ran a lifetime best with 8.66. Shaelee Sweatfield took 2nd in the 800m with 2:24. And Seth Gutzwiller was 12th in the 3000m with 9:10.

Coming Up:
Jan 17-18: BYU Invitational
Jan 24: Utah Distance Challenge (Olympic Oval)
Jan 24-25: Weber State Invitational (field events Friday night)

I just want to end by reiterating how much I truly believe hard work pays off. Don't get discouraged - never give up. Commit yourself 100% to be your best in what you are doing and to making those around you be their best as well. Thanks.

Indoor Track Update - January 1

Darts -
I hope that you have enjoyed the break. I am sure we can all agree that it is over too quickly. I also hope that you haven't let yourself get too out of shape. I am sure we all have some work to do as we start back to school and face the new year.
It is a great day for a fresh start and an opportunity to really commit to being your best this entire year. You can already ask yourself "What did I do today to make me better? To make me stronger? What goals am I chasing this year and how am I going to get there?" I hope you approach this year with determination to be your best in school, to be a good family member and a good person, and to be your best as a track athlete. Approach each day and each workout with purpose and with a positive attitude. Use each day as an opportunity to learn and progress. Life is full of challenges and ups and downs, but with some hard work, positive thinking, and will power, there is greatness to be found in each of us. Find your greatness in 2014!
*If there are any of you who wanted to do indoor track, but didn't come to anything before the winter break, IT IS NOT TOO LATE. Consider this an invitation to start with us this week or next week. The work and preparation you put in now will really benefit you when we get to the outdoor season.

Join the Davis Track & Field group on Facebook and follow us on Twitter @davistrackandxc

Here are a few reminders about upcoming practices/meets:
Thursday (1/2) - Meet in the cafeteria at 2:45.
Friday (1/3) - Meet in the cafeteria at 2:45.
Saturday (1/4) - Clinic/Practice in Morgan for any Hurdlers, High Jumpers, and Throwers. We will meet at the school at 7:30am. Bring a snack, a water bottle, and about $10 for lunch. We will be working out at the indoor facility in Morgan. This would be a great time for new hurdlers to really get some good work in with Ben and Coach West, and a good chance for the high jumpers to actually practice some jumping, and the throwers to get some measured throws. We should be home by about 1:00 pm. We will need a few drivers. Let me know if you have any questions.

Saturday (1/11) - Utah State Invitational. Our first meet!! I will send out more information next week. We will be taking one bus. Approach this meet as an opportunity to see where you are to start the year and to get some practice competing indoors.

I am really looking forward to this track season. Happy New Year to each of you. I wish you the best in 2014.
