Darts -
This is a longer email, but I hope you will take the time to read it. We have had 2 solid weeks of indoor track going. The workouts have been great, and we can see that many of you are excited and determined to get fit (strong and fast). Plus, a lot of you are bringing some good energy. We have the beginnings of a TEAM, but we have a lot of work in front of us, and we can improve in a lot of areas.
First of all, if you have not come to a practice for indoor, it is NOT too late to get started (it's also not too late the first week after the break, but the sooner the better). Don't be afraid to come to the next few practices and get the ball rolling. We only have 4 practices left this year! You may also decide to just start up when we get to outdoor track (February 27), but I think you will regret not putting in some work and gaining some experience during indoor.
Secondly, those of you who have committed to this TEAM have got to do a little better at being consistent and finding some DESIRE and PURPOSE. I was a bit disappointed this morning. We had a very fun Christmas run - Santa hats, Christmas sweaters, holiday music, pancakes and chocolate milk - and I know it was a "distance" run, but we opened it up to sprinters, hurdlers, jumpers, and even throwers to come and do the best you can (even 2 miles if that is all you were ready for). I invited you all week, hoping we would see some excited, passionate ATHLETES who want to be a part of this and want to get better. Shawna was there flipping pancakes, and excited to see if her speed group was tough enough (or self-motivated enough) to come and put in some work. There were only about 5 from the speed/hurdle/jump group who came. Maybe we have a bunch of wimps on this team, but I don't think so. I think you have more to give...No one DIED from the cold or early run this morning, but quite a few people build some character and had a good TEAM experience. The alternative? Stay in bed and get "softer".
We really want to see what you are made of. You are NOT going to get these days back, and right now there is only a small handful of you who are willing to really pay the price to get better. I don't care if you are training to break 4:00 in the mile or 7:00. I don't care if you are training to go under 50 seconds in the 400 or under 70 seconds (or just training to finish the 400 for that matter). Whatever you are trying to do, start finding ways to do your best! You are not going to get better and you are not going to be satisfied if you aren't willing to sacrifice, to hurt, and to spend some time trying hard to get better. We can ALL improve and we can all dig deeper to get better. Quit finding stupid reasons and excuses NOT to workout; quit being LAZY; quit being AFRAID. I hope you all have GOALS, and I hope you all want to accomplish something by doing track & field with us. Now let's see some desire and passion. Let's see you working your butt off to get better and to be a part of something great - part of a TEAM. A number of you are doing a great job at this by the way, I just know that a bunch of you have more in you than I have seen so far in the first 2 weeks.

Now some business...
Practice this week - We will have practice on Monday and Tuesday (Cafeteria at 2:45pm). No practice on Wednesday.
Practice over the Break - We are going to have 2 organized practices over the break - both Thursdays. Distance runners should meet at the school at 8:00am and everyone else at 9:00am. We will have a workout and open the indoor track and the weight room. It will be a great opportunity to maintain your fitness and to get some extra work (maybe even some block work). Thursdays - 12/22 and 12/29. We will hand out suggested workouts for the other days on your own. Do something! Don't come back completely out of shape.
Hurdle Clinic (12/30) - We would like ALL of the hurdlers to attend a hurdle clinic on Friday, 12/30. We will meet at the school at 8:00am and we will be going to Morgan to the indoor track. It will give you a chance to work on all 5 hurdles. We will provide lunch (Cafe Rio) after. It's a fun "Hurdle Mafia" tradition.
Indoor Track Fee - Please pay $25 in the office before the break on Wednesday. Checks made out to Davis High. Thanks for those who have paid.
Indoor Racing Tops - You can wear whatever you want for indoor races, but we will have team tops available for purchase. We will have samples at practice this week. They will cost $26, but they are going to be awesome! Sign up for one at practice this week.
Social Media - Follow us on Twitter (@davistrackandxc) and Instagram (@davistrackandxc). Cool updates and pictures to come (not just of distance runners). We're almost to 1000 followers on Twitter!
Parent Emails - If your parents would like to be on the email list, please send me their name and email address. They will then get the weekly updates (usually also posted at www.davisindoortrack.blogspot.com).
Indoor Track Schedule:
January 6-7: BYU Invite
January 20-21: Weber State Invite
January 27-28: Utah Indoor Championships
February 6-7: Boise Indoor Meet (small group)

Indoor Track Update - 12/10
Darts -
Welcome to the Davis Indoor Track TEAM. It was exciting to see so many of you at the meeting on Tuesday. We had some great opening practices this week, but there were quite a few of you who didn't attend, and we really hope that you will give it a try this coming week. Don't be afraid and don't be LAZY!
Indoor track can be VERY beneficial many reasons. We're building strength and speed and endurance that will help you with outdoor track (and with other sports), and we work hard to build a TEAM atmosphere. The unity we build now, will help us a ton in outdoor track as we make a run for the region and state championships. But we need to have committed individuals! We want athletes who will show up with a strong desire to get better. Who are willing to work and to make sacrifices to be at the practices. Who won't give up when it gets hard.
Frequently Asked (or Thought) Questions:
What if I am not very fast? I hear this concern a lot. The truth is, it doesn't matter how fast you are. Of course, the whole point is trying to get faster or jump higher or throw farther, but the MOST IMPORTANT thing to focus on is self-improvement, NOT comparison to others. Plus, you never know how good you might get. We have too many sophomores who give up because they don't feel "fast enough" - well, who knows how "FAST" you might get if you consistently worked at it for a year or two.
What do I do if I am in Junior High? We love having 8th and 9th graders work out with us. I think it helps them have a good base going into their junior high season. It is just a bit tricky since practice is already going. Distance runners should meet every day at the south doors (and Fridays in my classroom). The high school group will wait some days, and some days it will just be the junior high group. Sprinters/Hurdlers/Jumpers should find Coach Shawna and do a quick warm up and then jump into the workout with the sprint group. Check the following places: The hall upstairs, the indoor track, the small gym, the weight room, the outdoor track. It will work out once you get into the routine. 9th graders can compete in all of the meets, and 8th graders can compete in most of the meets.
What if I am a senior and this is my first year? I love when seniors are brave enough to try something like this in their final year, and quite often they have a lot of success and a lot of fun. Do your best to learn quickly, work hard, and enjoy the experience. I hope it becomes one of your best memories from high school.
What if I have some other conflicts? We will work with your busy schedules. Try to let your event coaches know when and why you are going to miss. Communication will help us coach you better.
What if I don't want to compete? It is okay if you just work out with us through the indoor season, but we are still going to encourage you to try the track meets. It's a lot more fun that way and it gives you something to work harder for. In outdoor track, if you are on the TEAM, you have to participate in the meets.
What if I am not sure what event to do? That's okay. Try a few different events in practice and pay attention to 2 things: What do I feel successful at and What do I enjoy. Eventually, you will start to gravitate toward your event.
This Week:
Monday-Thursday - Meet in the cafeteria at 2:45
Hurdlers - We are having an introduction hurdle clinic with Coach West on Tuesday and Thursday - It's very important to be there.
Throwers - Meet in the upstairs weight room right after school on A-Days (Tuesday-Thursday) and the cafeteria with the group on B-Days. We WILL be throwing on B-Days!
Distance Runners - We will also meet on Friday in my classroom at 2:45.
*It is extremely important for Hurdlers and Jumpers to meet with the speed group on Mondays and Wednesdays. At this point, the work we do those days is much more important than technique work.
Indoor Track Fee - Please pay $25 in the office. Make the checks out to 'Davis High School' and tell them it is for indoor track.
Lockers - if you need a locker, check with me at the meetings in the cafeteria.
The information I handed out Tuesday is attached to this email. You can expect an email from me each weekend.
Let me know if you have any questions!
See you ALL on Monday.

Indoor Track Update - Simplot Games!!
Darts -
It's hard to believe that Spring is already here. It is starting to feel like track season outside. We are going to officially start outdoor track this week, and I hope you are all as excited as I am about the season we have in front of us. It is shaping up to be one of our greatest seasons in many ways. We have a busy first few weeks - so please refer to the items below to make sure you are ready. You can see the season meet schedule at www.darttrack.blogspot.com you can also follow us on Twitter (@davistrackandxc), Instagram (@davistrackandxc) and join the Facebook TEAM page (Davis Track & Field).
Outdoor Track Meeting - We will meet on Thursday (February 25th) at 2:30 in the Main Gym (or the Auxiliary Gym). Everyone should be in attendance. We will NOT work out after the meeting.
Simplot Games - This might have been our greatest Simplot games yet. We set a record for the most athletes from one school at the Simplot Games with 113 athletes - breaking last year's record of 111. We set a Simplot Games record with 36 relay teams in the meet - also breaking last year's record of 35. We tied a team record with 24 individual athletes qualifying for finals. We also tied our team record with 14 relays racing on Saturday. And we set a new team record with 102 team points (scoring the top 8 places). Our previous best was 83 points last year and our 3rd best ever is 62 points in 2014. And just as important as all of those TEAM and Simplot records was the drive, positive attitude, and unity that we saw from each of our athletes. Our TEAM is most definitely something special, and it showed throughout the Simplot Games. I was very proud of the way you all competed with heart and Davis Pride, and I was also very happy with the way you all conducted yourselves off the track - in the stands and at the hotel. Thank you so much for making your coaches proud.
We had so many highlights throughout the games. We talked about a lot of the Thursday-Friday highlights in that very hot Simplot hotel meeting Friday night. I would like to cover some of the Saturday highlights. Our field events are looking very strong. Matt Calvin was being cautious with a tight hamstring, but still nearly got his pole vault PR - he finished 4th with 14'09 - our best Simplot pole vault finish in over 13 years. Hunter Simonsen and Nate Allred both cleared 6'05 for 4th and 5th place. Hunter also finished 6th in the long jump with an indoor PR of 21'05. They were our highest jumps finishes in over 13 years. In the sprints, Melanie Sullivan had the highlight of the day with a 57.12 performance in the 400m Dash. It breaks the school record she set 2 weeks ago by over a full second (58.17). Melanie was 7th and was the top Utah finisher in a very good field. Jake Moffett also performed well in the 60m Dash, tying his PR with 7.16 - good enough for 13th overall (and 2nd from Utah). In the hurdles, Jaron Erickson set a new PR of 8.35 and finished 7th - just barely out of the medals; it is the Davis #3 All Time mark. In the distance races, Logan MacKay set a new School and Utah State record with 1:52.64 in a very hard fought 800m race for 2nd. It is the #4 mark in the U.S. so far this season. Courtney Wayment led 6 Davis girls in the 1600m finals with her 3rd place finish in 4:59.07. Ally and Aubrey finished 11th and 12th in the 1600m with very strong efforts after the 4 x 800m relay. Alicia Halverson was the only 9th grader to make finals in the 1600 and she finished with her PR of 5:24.20. Our boy milers were all in the fast heat, but had all run previous relay races - Frasier was still able to pull off a solid PR of 4:28.60. In the 3200, we had 3 girls make the finals - Sarah Waddoups finished on the podium with 6th in 11:29, Sammy Hedquist ran an indoor PR of 11:31, and Abi Waddoups (just a 9th grader) fought hard after getting tripped early to finish 13th in 11:49. They ran a great team race and helped each other throughout the race. Camren Todd finished 10th in probably the fastest EVER Simplot Games 3200m. Camren ran a very strong 9:26 (less than a second off of his PR). To give a comparison, in 2007 Jared Ward (as a senior) won the Simplot 3200m in 9:29. He (as you know) is now on the U.S. Olympic Marathon team.
The relays are always the highlight of the Saturday - and this was our top relay year EVER. We finished 1st in three of the relays, and an extremely close (and exciting) 2nd in 3 more relays. The girls and boys both won the 4 x 800m relay. The girls (Aubrey, Alicia, Jenna, and Ally) ran 9:40 and won by almost 10 seconds; all 4 girls also raced in the 1600m finals. It was our first 1st place finish ever for the girls. The boys 4 x 800 (Frasier, Bryce, Jason, and Colter) kept it a bit closer as they ran 8:05 and won by just over 1 second. It is our 5th 1st place finish in 7 years for the boys. We finished a close 2nd in both of the medley relays. The girls (Ruby Jane, Megan, Gabi, and Jenna) were 2nd by only .57 seconds. It was a tremendous effort from all 4 girls. Our girls B Team (Becky, Rachel, Kenzie, and Miah) nearly made the podium with strong 7th place finish - the only B Team to make finals. The boys medley relay (McGyver, Jake, Sawyer, and Colter) was even closer as Colter gave all he had to come back from 5th place and catch the leader with less than 100m to go - it was a tight finish, and we were only .09 out of 1st. It was one of the most exciting races of the meet. The girls and boys 4 x 400 relays finished us off with more excitement. The girls A team (BriAnna, Ruby Jane, Ally, and Melanie) got the victory in 3:58 - only the 2nd Davis team and 3rd team ever from Utah to go under 4:00 indoors. And our B Team (Megan, Rachel, Brittney, and Courtney) also made the podium in 6th place - also the only B Team in the finals. The Boys 4 x 400 (Jake, McGyver, Kelton, and Logan) shattered our school record by 3 seconds with a very impressive 3:24.85 - just .22 out of first place. It is the 3rd fastest indoor 4 x 400 ever run by a Utah team. Logan nearly pulled off the come from behind victory with his final split of 49.7. In all, we had 3 relay teams take 2nd by .88 combined seconds. Great efforts - and very fun to watch all of the relays throughout the 2 days. There is something about digging deeper for your teammates in a relay that always gets me fired up.
While we had many strong performances throughout the 3 days and a ton of athletes who were in multiple (4+ races or events), I felt the most impressive came on Saturday from Jenna Connell with her 1600-800-800 triple - running two fantastic relay 800m legs and finishing the day with a 2:18.6 PR in her 5th race of the weekend. And from Colter Blanchard who showed a ton of guts in his two 800m anchor relay legs (1:58-1:56) - both coming down to the wire - and then convincing me to let him run the 1600m finals as his 3rd race of the day and 5th race of the meet. Both showed a ton of courage, fearlessness, and TEAM sacrifice and they are definitely our BEASTS of the MEET.
A special thanks to all parents and coaches that helped to make this trip happen. It is a challenge to have 100+ athletes at the Simplot Games - and it is only possible because we have some outstanding support. We are so grateful for good parents and we are so thankful for the trust you give us. Also - thanks for raising some outstanding kids (on and off the track). If I owe any parents gas money, please don't be afraid to send your son or daughter in to ask. Thanks!!!!!!

Indoor Update - Feb 8
Utah Distance Challenge - The Distance Challenge is a meet that we created about 5 years ago. The meet is at the Olympic Oval on Friday, February 12th. We are in charge. The first race is the 1600 at 5:00pm. Each athlete will need to pay $5 at the gate (no pre-registration) - and all spectators are FREE. There will be chocolate milk for the athletes. The events will go in the following order (girls race first) - 1600m, 400m, 800m, 3200m. All of the information is listed at www.utahdistancechallenge.blogspot.com I am looking for some parent volunteers to help at the front gate and at the finish line area. Please let me know if you are interested and if you would be able to help from 4pm until 8 or 9pm.
Simplot Games - Information will be sent in another email to simplify this email. The papers and money are due tomorrow (in case I don't get to the other email tonight).
Boise Invite - We had a smaller group compete in a track meet in Boise this past weekend. It was a successful trip with a bunch of PRs, and a few very solid All-Time marks. Melanie Sullivan set the SCHOOL INDOOR record in the 400m Dash with 58.17 - it breaks a 17 year old record (1999). Courtney Wayment ran 4:56 in the mile - the #2 All-Time mark. Ruby Jane Mathewson and Megan Rowe both ran top 10 marks in the hurdles (9.53 for Ruby and 9.70 for Megan). Jake Moffett ran the #5 all-time mark in the 200m with 22.82. Freshman, Abi Waddoups, won the 3200m with 11:35 (Davis #8 all time). Colton Rimann finished 2nd in the 2 mile with 9:38 (Davis #7 All Time). The girls 4 x 800 ran our 2nd fastest in history with 9:20 - Jenna, Aubrey, Ally, and Courtney - It was also the 3rd fastest in the U.S. when we ran it on Friday night. The girls 4 x 200 ran our #3 All Time - 1:46.34 (BriAnna, Brittney, Ruby Jane, and Melanie) - and more importantly they won the 12 second bet against the boys (boys only beat them by 11.8 seconds). The boys 4 x 800 ran our #2 All-Time mark at 7:50 - Jason, Camren, Colter, and Logan. It was the fastest time in the U.S. by a team from one school. Logan anchored with 1:51.5 which would be U.S. #1 in an open (by over 1 second). The boys 4 x 200 ran a very quick time for a 200m track with 1:34.58 (Davis #6) - Jake, McGyver, Sawyer, and Kelton.
The results for our athletes are listed at the bottom of the email. The performance and all-time lists are updated on the blog (www.davisindoortrack.blogspot.com).
Alumni - We have had many college (and Pro) athletes tearing it up. Jared Ward is running the U.S. Olympic Marathon Trials this upcoming Saturday (Feb 13) in Los Angeles. He will have a shot at making the Olympic team (top 3 finishers). The race should be fully broadcast online - I will try to send out the link (or you can google U.S. Olympic Marathon Trials). Shea Martinez is currently ranked #5 in the NCAA in the indoor 800m with 2:04.52. And a ton of other former Davis athletes are performing great and we wish them good luck in their upcoming conference meets. I am sure I will miss some of them - Utah State: Joanna Boyd, Devin Lang, Chance Parker, Andrew Aposhian, Zach Cottrell; University of Utah: Christine Van Brocklin; BYU: Brad Nye, Alex Hedquist, Josey Hedquist; SUU: Ashley Tyndall; UVU: Logan Petty, Tatum Beard, Kyler Sprague, Bailey Carling; Weber State: Preston Johnson, Ellie Child.
Hopefully this is all helpful information. Please let me know if you have any questions.
Thanks!

Indoor Update - 2/1
Darts -
This is the first email I am sending to the entire track class (as well as those who have been doing indoor track). If any of you would like me to add your parents to the email list, please just send me there email addresses.
I just want to remind all of you that we will officially begin outdoor track practices with a meeting on Thursday, February 25th after school. Until that point - just keep working hard with the track class and/or indoor track. It really is shaping up to be one of our greatest outdoor seasons! But it will take a TEAM effort with a lot of hard work from a lot of people (each of you). Leave your mark!
Utah Coaches Championships - We had one of our biggest indoor meets of the season last Friday and Saturday. It is the only meet we attend that is team-scored, and we came away with a win for both the boys and the girls. The boys won in dominating fashion with 97 points. 2nd place was the Gold Medal All-Star team with 69 and 3rd place was Timpanogos with 25. The girls competition was a bit closer. We got the victory with 73 points. Our rival, Syracuse, was 2nd with 55, and Herriman (last year's outdoor champs) were 3rd with 45.
The meet really showed our progress through the indoor season - we had so many personal and season bests! The girls had 80 season best marks out of 85 events, and season best marks in all 3 relays. The boys had 115 season bests out of 130 events and also had our best marks in all 3 relays. We had some phenomenal Davis All Time marks: Melanie Sullivan ran the #2 All-Time in both the 400m (59.37) and the 200m (25.95), Courtney Wayment ran our 3rd best 1600 (4:59) and 4th best 800m (2:16), Ruby Jane ran our #9 all time in the 60m hurdles (9.67), Matt Calvin vaulted 15'00 (Davis #2 All-Time) - it is also the best indoor vault by a Utahn since 1995. Hunter Simonsen long jumped our #3 all time with 21'04, Logan MacKay ran our #2 all-time marks in both the 1600m (4:13) and the 800m (1:53), Colter Blanchard ran the #6 all-time in the 1600 with 4:20, and Camren Todd ran our #4 all-time 3200 with 9:25 (only :02 away from the school record). We ended the meet with some very strong relays - victories for the boys and the girls in the 4 x 400, both in All-Time top 10 marks.
The Davis results are at the bottom of the email, and the full results can be seen at www.runnercard.com
Simplot Games - The Simplot information has been handed out and is also attached to this email (for those invited). The waivers and the money ($135) are due on Tuesday, February 9th. Please let me know ASAP if you are on the list but will be unable to attend.
Utah Distance Challenge - We are actually in charge of the next indoor meet in Utah. It is called the Utah Distance Challenge at the Olympic Oval on Friday, February 12th. The meet will begin at 5:00pm and will include the 400m, 800m, 1600m, and 3200m races. All sprinters and hurdlers should plan on coming and running the 400m. The schedule and details can be found at www.utahdistancechallenge.blogspot.com I will send out more details prior to the meet next week.
If anyone is in a position to help with sponsorship, we are looking for any corporate sponsors to help off-set the cost of the Olympic Oval rental.
This Week's (remaining) Schedule:
Tuesday - Meet in the cafeteria at 2:45
Wednesday - Track Class
Thursday - Meet in the cafeteria at 2:45
Friday - Track Class
Outdoor Track Schedule - http://darttrack.blogspot.com/p/2014-schedule.html
