Simplot Summary

Davis athletes and parents,

I hope that you are all recovered from an incredible weekend at the Simplot Games. This year’s Simplot will be remembered as one of the most successful in Davis history. I will definitely remember it as one of my favorites. I had a lot of fun spending time with the TEAM, but mostly I was proud of the way you all competed and the attitude that you each bring to our TEAM. I really felt that the hard work we have put in all season paid off with some outstanding performances, and I was so impressed with your attitudes and with how the TEAM came together.

There were so many memorable performances that it would be near impossible to point them all out (So I am sorry if I miss some that were noteworthy). Some of the few that come to mind include: McKenna Hill getting up after 2 falls to finish the 60m hurdles; Ryan Avery giving his all to lean at the end of the 4 x 200 then falling hard on the track, but then coming back to make finals in his other 2 events; Caitlin Miller falling hard on the first start of her race, then running courageously in the 1600m despite her recent ankle injury; Jon Ferguson focusing enough to run hard in the 200m, then deal with the disappointment of not making finals in the long jump, but then getting a 4th jump and reaching the mark; Brooke Jensen running a determined hurdles race in the morning finals on Saturday – good enough to make it in the top 6 overall and get a medal; Leland Stenquist coming through big with two 800 races on Saturday faster than he was able to run the open race on Friday; Sylvia Harrison being explosive out of the blocks for the first time this season and ending up as the fastest Utahn in the 60m while jumping rather than leaning over the finish line; Carston Feigleson’s toughness in the trials of the 3200m to make it as the last runner into the finals; Rachel and Chelsea Jackson each running four 400s in 2 days – both of them ran all four races under their previous indoor prs; Alec Pectol running his first ever 60m hurdle race being able to 3 step the entire race; Candace Eddy fighting hard but coming up just short of her 3rd Simplot 1600 victory (incredible after all she’s been through in the past year); Curtis Carlisle running 2:04 in the medley 800 to surprise us all with a 10 second pr; Jessica Wilding running 3 tough races in about 3 hours on Saturday – each race was a pr: 2:28 800, 5:25 1600, 2:26 800; Drew Rees stepping up for the 4 x 400 finals and running a big pr for us; Emily Hansen staying tough in the finals of the 3200 – despite the pain from a calf injury she is still trying to get over; both of Brittany Sumsion’s 800s where she showed confidence and patience and set some big prs; guys and girls like Tyson Bullock, Kye Kunz, Austin Facer, Benson Richards, Missy Lott, Dani Figgins, and others who were so willing to push so hard through all the relays that we ran; the 8 girls in the 4 x 800 who fought hard and ended up with 8 medals; and I was also extremely proud of my wife Stefanie for her hard work in training for the coaches mile and for her strong performance and also for putting up with my coaching all the time – I couldn’t do it without her. The support that the TEAM showed for the people competing was also amazing – I think that the rail patrol gave up on us midway through Saturday. It is always thrilling to hear the Davis cheering squad and to be a part of the enthusiasm and excitement that we bring.

A special thanks to Coach West for all that she does for the TEAM – for her positive attitude and her experience and her care and concern for each of you. Also, thanks to the parents who helped us with driving and cheering. Thanks to Steve Petty for taking a bunch of pictures that will eventually make it on the blog (www.davisindoortrack.blogspot.com). Thanks to the Gutzwiller’s for running to the store for me 3 straight days and getting food and water. Thanks to Caralyn Facer, Becky Kussee, and Jill Hedquist for help with chaperoning at the hotel. Thanks to Dave King for his continued support and for helping with the split taking at the meet. Thanks to Corine Barney and Tracey Meade for driving so far and taking time off work to support us all the time. Thanks to all parents for allowing the athletes to go up and compete – you should all be proud of your kids. And lastly, thanks to the athletes for making me a proud coach - for giving your all and for not complaining and for not giving me too much of a headache on Thursday and Friday nights at the hotel and for being appreciative. Thanks to the few athletes from other teams who were a big part of our indoor team this season (Tyler and Amy from Layton and Cassie from Northridge).

I love being part of this TEAM, and I loved the efforts I saw from each of you this past weekend – thanks for everything,
Coach Talley
