Indoor Track Update - 12/10

Darts -
Welcome to the Davis Indoor Track TEAM. It was exciting to see so many of you at the meeting on Tuesday. We had some great opening practices this week, but there were quite a few of you who didn't attend, and we really hope that you will give it a try this coming week. Don't be afraid and don't be LAZY!
Indoor track can be VERY beneficial many reasons. We're building strength and speed and endurance that will help you with outdoor track (and with other sports), and we work hard to build a TEAM atmosphere. The unity we build now, will help us a ton in outdoor track as we make a run for the region and state championships. But we need to have committed individuals! We want athletes who will show up with a strong desire to get better. Who are willing to work and to make sacrifices to be at the practices. Who won't give up when it gets hard.

Frequently Asked (or Thought) Questions:
What if I am not very fast? I hear this concern a lot. The truth is, it doesn't matter how fast you are. Of course, the whole point is trying to get faster or jump higher or throw farther, but the MOST IMPORTANT thing to focus on is self-improvement, NOT comparison to others. Plus, you never know how good you might get. We have too many sophomores who give up because they don't feel "fast enough" - well, who knows how "FAST" you might get if you consistently worked at it for a year or two.

What do I do if I am in Junior High? We love having 8th and 9th graders work out with us. I think it helps them have a good base going into their junior high season. It is just a bit tricky since practice is already going. Distance runners should meet every day at the south doors (and Fridays in my classroom). The high school group will wait some days, and some days it will just be the junior high group. Sprinters/Hurdlers/Jumpers should find Coach Shawna and do a quick warm up and then jump into the workout with the sprint group. Check the following places: The hall upstairs, the indoor track, the small gym, the weight room, the outdoor track. It will work out once you get into the routine. 9th graders can compete in all of the meets, and 8th graders can compete in most of the meets.

What if I am a senior and this is my first year? I love when seniors are brave enough to try something like this in their final year, and quite often they have a lot of success and a lot of fun. Do your best to learn quickly, work hard, and enjoy the experience. I hope it becomes one of your best memories from high school.

What if I have some other conflicts? We will work with your busy schedules. Try to let your event coaches know when and why you are going to miss. Communication will help us coach you better.

What if I don't want to compete?
It is okay if you just work out with us through the indoor season, but we are still going to encourage you to try the track meets. It's a lot more fun that way and it gives you something to work harder for. In outdoor track, if you are on the TEAM, you have to participate in the meets.

What if I am not sure what event to do? That's okay. Try a few different events in practice and pay attention to 2 things: What do I feel successful at and What do I enjoy. Eventually, you will start to gravitate toward your event.

This Week:
Monday-Thursday - Meet in the cafeteria at 2:45
Hurdlers - We are having an introduction hurdle clinic with Coach West on Tuesday and Thursday - It's very important to be there.
Throwers - Meet in the upstairs weight room right after school on A-Days (Tuesday-Thursday) and the cafeteria with the group on B-Days. We WILL be throwing on B-Days!
Distance Runners - We will also meet on Friday in my classroom at 2:45.
*It is extremely important for Hurdlers and Jumpers to meet with the speed group on Mondays and Wednesdays. At this point, the work we do those days is much more important than technique work.

Indoor Track Fee - Please pay $25 in the office. Make the checks out to 'Davis High School' and tell them it is for indoor track.
Lockers - if you need a locker, check with me at the meetings in the cafeteria.

The information I handed out Tuesday is attached to this email. You can expect an email from me each weekend.
Let me know if you have any questions!
See you ALL on Monday.
No FEAR!!
